Aurifil 28wt Mako Cotton Thread

Aurifil’s 28 weight thread is their heaviest cotton thread available on a spool, making it the perfect choice when you want your stitching to stand out boldly. This 2-ply, 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton thread adds rich texture and definition to your work—ideal for projects where the thread is meant to be seen.

Commonly used for topstitching, machine quilting, hand quilting, blanket stitch applique, bobbin work, and even 2-strand cross stitch, 28wt gives your projects extra visual impact. It’s also a favorite for machine lace and serging decorative edges.

For best results when machine sewing with 28wt, pair it with Aurifil 50wt in the bobbin and lower your top tension slightly to accommodate the thicker thread.

Tip: Want even bolder texture? Try Aurifil 12wt. Prefer subtler stitching? 40wt or 50wt may be a better fit.
